1. Godzilla
The first thing most people will probably notice is that Godzilla does not look like a current-gen game. While the character models of the Kaiju themselves look respectably good – particularly fan favorites like Mothra and Destroyah, as well as the several versions of Godzilla – the destructible environments that surround them are far from impressive. The city blocks in each area look as though they’ve been copied and pasted to fill space, aside from the few unique structures that mark the difference between one nondescript urban location and the next. Even in the midst of a monstrous rampage, these structures all explode and crumble in a similar fashion, breaking apart into the same standard chunks as the building before it. Even on PS3 or Xbox 360, I’d have described these settings as lackluster.
Genre: Action, Adventure
Platform: PS3 | PS4 | PS5
Publisher: Bandai Namco Games
2. Kyoei Toshi
City Shrouded in Shadow is one of the most ambitious Kaiju video games of all time, and sadly it never made its way outside of Japan. City Shrouded in Shadow The word Kaiju encompasses a genre with a lot of variation and many massively popular series. The genre has been popular in Japan for a long time but recently came into more popularity with films like Pacific Rim and 2014’s Godzilla. It’s not a genre often explored in video games, however. In Japan, Kaiju movies are a part of the Tokusatsu entertainment, which is generally science fiction film or television dramas that heavily rely on special effects and costuming. Things like Ultraman or Power Rangers also fall into Tokusatsu.
Genre: Action, Survival
Platform: PS4
Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
3. Godzilla: Save the Earth
The world’s greatest movie monster and his numerous, gigantic enemies are back in Godzilla: Save the Earth, sort of a sequel to 2002’s Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee for the GameCube. The new game, available only for the PS2 and Xbox, features nearly 20 different, recognizable monsters, as well as what seems like a wide variety of modes of play, including an online one. However, at its core, Godzilla: Save the Earth is still a rather clunky, unfulfilling fighting game whose cast of characters is by far the best thing it has going for it. Hardcore Godzilla fans will appreciate seeing the decent renderings of some of their favorite monsters here, but they’re unlikely to be terribly impressed by the action itself.
Genre: Fighting
Platform: PS2 | Xbox
Publisher: Atari, Inc.
4. Godzilla: Unleashed
Why is it so hard to make games involving giant monsters fighting in recognizable urban landscapes fun? Going all the way back to the NES, Godzilla games are rarely more than a cheap, mediocre cash-in on the Toho license. Kaiju fans will likely get more enjoyment out of watching Godzilla vs. Monster Zero for the millionth time than giving the giant lizard’s latest game a play. Godzilla: Unleashed is another four-player brawler starring the radioactive lizard and all his giant monster buddies. The roster includes a good chunk of the kaiju creatures fans know from the movies as well as two new abnormalities called Obsidius and Krystalak. Each beast shares the same control scheme but has its own special attacks and throws. There are several real-world locations such as San Francisco, London, and Seattle just waiting to be leveled by you and your otaku friends.
Genre: Action, Fighting
Platform: Android | iOS
Publisher: Atari
5. Global Defence Force
Five other series and new series that are being developed, it is strange and miraculous indeed to find that despite the interesting premise, many gamers outside the Japanese region are still not familiar with the name Earth Defense Force. Even though this one game carries a concept that maybe only Japanese developers can think of. Consistently worked on and developed by Sandlot under the banner of D3 Publisher, it will ask you to fight as a “low class” army which in movies like Godzilla or Ultraman for example, never has a significant contribution other than just “ticking” the giant monster. An attraction that, as we mentioned earlier, would never have occurred to western developers.
Genre: Action, TPS
Platform: Android | iOS
Publisher: D3 Publisher
6. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee
Traditionally, the Godzilla license has been one of the most disappointing in video game history. Despite a few decent games, such as the aptly namedGodzilla for the NES, most games to bear the Godzilla name have been less than stellar, ranging from the mediocrity of the Game Boy color games to downright atrociousness of the Dreamcast’s Godzilla Generations. Nearly every time a new Godzilla game gets released legions of devout G-fans wet themselves with excitement at game store checkout stands, only to have their hopes of a playing a good Godzilla game crushed by a sub-par product. There are very few exceptions to this rule. Luckily, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee is one of these exceptions.
